FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most about visiting Hawaii's volcanoes.

Is it safe to visit an active volcano?

Yes. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is set up for visitors, and our guides keep you in safe, open areas and on marked trails. We monitor conditions every day and never enter closed zones. The biggest things to be aware of are volcanic gas and changing weather, which we plan around.

Will I see flowing lava?

Lava is never guaranteed. Kilauea's activity rises and falls, and there are often quiet periods. Even when there is no surface lava, you will see dramatic craters, steam vents, hardened lava fields, and rainforest, and on active nights the volcano glow can light up the sky. We share the latest activity when you book so you know what to expect.

What should I wear and bring?

The summit sits around 4,000 feet, so it is cooler and wetter than the beaches. Dress in layers, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring a rain jacket, water, snacks, and sun protection. A flashlight is handy for evening tours. See our Travel Tips for the full list.

Are the tours family-friendly?

Yes. The crater overlooks involve easy walking and work well for most ages. A few trails are longer or uneven, so tell us who is coming and we will recommend the best tour for your group.

What happens if the weather or park conditions change?

Conditions can shift quickly at a volcano. If part of the park closes or the weather turns, your guide adjusts the route to the best open sights so you still have a great day. Learn more on our Conditions page.

How long are the tours, and is hotel pickup included?

Land tours run roughly 5 to 7 hours, the helicopter flight about 50 to 60 minutes, and the Oahu day trip about 10 to 12 hours. Pickup options depend on the tour, so ask us when you book and we will sort out the logistics.

Do you offer the Oahu to volcano day trip?

Yes. Our Oahu to Volcanoes National Park Day Trip flies you from Oahu to the Big Island, guides you through the park, and returns you the same day, all without changing hotels.
