Your Safety Comes First
A volcano is a powerful, living place, and we take safety seriously so you can relax and enjoy it. Our guides are experienced, we monitor park conditions daily, and we keep every tour within safe, open areas. The notes below help you know what to expect and how to stay comfortable.
Listen to Your Guide
Your guide knows the terrain, the current conditions, and the rules of the park. Following their direction is the single most important thing you can do. We stay on marked trails and in open areas and never enter closed zones.
Volcanic Gas (Vog)
Near the crater, the volcano releases gases, sometimes called vog. For most people this is not a problem, but if you have asthma, heart or respiratory conditions, are pregnant, or are traveling with young children or infants, take it easy and let your guide know. We adjust when air quality changes.
Stay on Trails and Behind Railings
Edges and ground near craters and lava fields can be unstable, and lava rock is sharp. Keep behind railings and on marked paths, and watch your footing. Closed areas are closed for good reason.
Dress and Pack for Safety
- Closed-toe shoes with good grip for uneven lava rock.
- Layers and a rain jacket, since the summit is cool and wet.
- Water and sun protection.
- A flashlight or headlamp for evening and twilight tours.
Weather and Visibility
Conditions at elevation change fast, with rain, fog, and cool temperatures common. If visibility or weather affects part of the tour, your guide adapts the plan to keep you safe and still show you the best of the park.
Health Considerations
Some tours include walking on uneven ground and time at higher elevation. If you have mobility or health concerns, contact us before booking and we will recommend the tour that fits you best.
Helicopter Tours
Our flight partners follow strict aviation safety standards, with pre-flight briefings and weather checks. Flights only operate when conditions are right.
