Conditions

A volcano is always changing. Here is how we keep your visit safe and informed.

Conditions Can Change Daily

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a living landscape. Eruptions can start or pause, trails and roads can open or close, and volcanic gas and weather can shift from one day to the next. None of this should stop you from visiting, but it does mean a good day depends on up-to-date information and a flexible plan.

We Monitor the Park Every Day

Our team checks the latest park alerts, air quality, and trail status before every tour. If something changes, your guide adjusts the route to the best open sights so your day stays smooth and worthwhile, even if a particular spot is closed.

What Can Affect Your Visit

  • Volcanic activity: surface lava comes and goes, so glow and lava viewing are never guaranteed.
  • Volcanic gas (vog): air quality near the crater can change with the wind and venting.
  • Closures: the National Park Service may close trails, overlooks, or roads for safety.
  • Weather: the summit is high, cool, and often rainy, which can affect visibility.

Check Official Sources Before You Go

For the most current status, we recommend the official sources, which we also follow:

  • National Park Service, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, for alerts, closures, and hours: nps.gov/havo.
  • USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, for Kilauea activity updates: usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea.
