Islands Born From Fire

The Hawaiian Islands are one of the most remote island chains on Earth, rising thousands of miles from any continent. So how did they get here? The answer is volcanoes. Every Hawaiian island, from Kauai to the Big Island, was built entirely by lava erupting from the ocean floor over millions of years. Understanding how these islands formed makes a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park even more meaningful, because you are standing on the very process that created Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Hotspot

Deep beneath the Pacific Ocean sits a volcanic hotspot, a fixed plume of hot, molten rock rising from deep within the Earth. Unlike most volcanoes, which form at the edges of tectonic plates, the Hawaiian hotspot sits in the middle of the Pacific Plate. As magma pushes up through the seafloor and erupts, it slowly builds a volcano. Over hundreds of thousands of years, that volcano grows tall enough to break the surface of the ocean and become an island.

A Conveyor Belt of Islands

Here is the fascinating part. The hotspot stays in roughly the same place, but the Pacific Plate above it is always moving, drifting slowly to the northwest by a few inches a year. As the plate moves, it carries each newly formed island away from the hotspot, and a new volcano begins to grow behind it. This is why the islands line up in a chain and why they get older as you travel northwest. Kauai is the oldest of the main islands, while the Big Island is the youngest and still sits over the hotspot today.

Why the Big Island Is Still Growing

Because the Big Island sits directly above the hotspot, it is the only Hawaiian island with active volcanoes. Kilauea and Mauna Loa still erupt, adding new land and reshaping the island. In fact, the Big Island is literally still growing. Off its southeast coast, an underwater volcano named Kamaehuakanaloa, once called Loihi, is slowly building toward the surface, the next Hawaiian island in the making, though it will not appear for tens of thousands of years.
